Parents: The Primary Relationship

Attachment to a nurturing and available parent is the safety a child needs to launch out into learning. Talitha Koum’s Intensive parenting support classes are held for the parents of our students at the Nurture Center each Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with child care provided by Baylor Urban Missions September through May. We do not insist that parents attend; we simply invite them into a circle of love and care.

This informal, but planned, time gives families an overview of topics from child development and parent-child interaction to health issues and care of the newborn. It also provides a forum for often-young mothers and mothers-to-be to ask questions about pregnancy, childbirth, or other issues that arise with their infants and growing toddlers.

The programs also cover a wide variety of topics that offer the families guidance and assistance with:

  • Health & Family Planning

  • Child Development

  • Responsive Relationship

  • Stress & Resilience

  • Parental Self Care

  • Education, Job training, Employment

  • Budgeting, Life Skills

  • Addiction recovery

  • Appreciation for the beauty of a child’s unfolding life

  • Monthly Bible study

We are grateful for the support of many community service organizations that offer their own brand of programming. Feel free to make a suggestion by contacting Donna Losak.

Volunteer Opportunities
You, your church, or civic group might provide:

  • A meal for this Tuesday 6 p.m. meeting (for parents, children, or both)

  • Provision of “gifty” items as Parent Meeting incentives (a great project for a Sunday School class or civic group; perhaps once a quarter have a drive for gift items like lotion, bath gel, shampoo, a set of towels, a set of sheets, picture frames, home decor items, etc.)
